Napili Point Resorts amazing location on Honokeana Bay allows our guests a unique opportunity to swim and snorkel with the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle – just steps outside their doors!
Known as “Honu,”, they symbolize good luck, endurance and long life in the Hawaiian culture. Hawai’i legend says that turtles were the guides for the first voyagers to Hawaii. Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles are on the endangered species status protected by Federal and State laws. Due to these efforts, honu are making a strong comeback and are now frequently seen in Hawai’i’s oceans. Please don’t touch the honu and keep a respectful distance from them!
Did you know? Sea turtles spend almost all their lives submerged beneath the waves but must frequently breathe air for the oxygen needed to meet the demands of their vigorous aquatic activity. With a single exhalation followed by rapid inhalation, sea turtles lungs are capable of conducting a rapid exchange of oxygen while preventing dangerous gases from being trapped during deep dives. During routine algae foraging, a honu can dive for four to five minutes and surface to breathe for only about two seconds. Turtles can rest or sleep underwater for several hours at a time; but submergence time is much shorter while diving for food or trying to escape predators.(http://www.myhawaiitraveler.com/September-2011/Hawaiis-Ancient-Ones/)
Seeing these animals in their natural environment is an experience like no other – enjoy!
